Sociedad de Trabajadores Mineros

Sociedad de Trabajadores Mineros S.A. (Sotrami) is a certified Fairtrade and Fairmined gold mine situated in the region of Nazca in the South of Lima, Peru.

Sotrami was founded in 1992 by a group of 165 artisanal miners. The artisanal miners put together their mining concessions and delegated the administration and coordination of the mine to Sotrami. The company offers a set of services to miners, from or purchase to electricity provision and transportation. The company also regulates the miners’ working zones and performs geological research on present and future sites.

The integration of the transformation process from ore to gold by Sotrami has enabled the miners to achieve higher margins. Additionally, regular investments in the infrastructure are being implemented.

Thanks to a loan from Impact Finance Fund, Sotrami has invested in equipment to increase processing capacity, which has more than doubled in two years. In April 2013, Impact Finance along with actors of the gold industry in Switzerland launched a joint effort to link fair gold mines with the Swiss market, leading to the creation of the Swiss Better Gold Association (SBGA). Impact Finance is a founder of the association and Benjamin Firmenich has been elected to its Board of Directors. Between October 2013 and December 2014, the initiative led to the sale of 330kg of gold to two Swiss refiners, thus rewarding our efforts.
